The10 Stages of Preparation for Thanksgiving Break

By Samantha Pitkin on November 18, 2014

Ladies and gentlemen, it is in fact that time of the year again. The time when the air becomes crisper and shockingly colder, all of the leaves have finally fallen off of the trees, and we’ve officially traded in our shorts and tank tops for leggings and parkas. If we weren’t college students, now might be the time when we get to cozy up to the fire drinking hot cocoa in our onesie pajamas.

Instead, we’re just getting cozy with our textbooks and the next midterm paper that’s due. It’s hard to stay focused when you have holiday music playing in your head round-the-clock and you get the idea of sledding and building snowmen every time you look outside of your window. Luckily, Thanksgiving break is right around the corner, and before you know it you’ll be reunited with that cozy-family-holiday feeling that you’ve been longing for this semester.

With Thanksgiving still a good week away it’s not time to slack off just yet, and there are still a few things we have to go through before we can officially call it quits for a few days. I call this last week before break “The 10 Pre-Thanksgiving Break Slump Stages.”

Stage 1: You just got the alert on your phone that Thanksgiving is 10 days away, and immediately start to double check your travel information.

Stage 2: Your teachers inevitably send out emails canceling class on Monday and Tuesday, leaving you to cry to your parents about how your tickets are already booked for Wednesday.

Stage 3: With much more vigor than you put into any of your studying, you call every transportation company to see what you can do to switch your ticket.

Stage 4: You end up getting your ticket switched to Monday! But now you realize you have to start packing two days earlier than you thought you would.

Stage 5: Remembering that you haven’t done laundry in a month, you call dibs on every washer/dryer in the building and sacrifice your Saturday night to the laundry gods and Netflix.

Stage 6: Now that all of your laundry is done, you have the task of sorting, folding, and choosing what you actually need to pack.

Stage 7: You decide that you need some cozy clothes, some dressy clothes for Thanksgiving dinner, and some casual things for going out with friends. The suitcase barely closes as it is and you realize there’s still more to pack…

Stage 8: You also realize that you have a huge paper due right when you get back from Thanksgiving, so you decide to pack all of your school supplies, thinking you’ll get it done during break (yeah right).

Stage 9: You have to go online to double check the weight limit of your bags for your flight and how many carry-ons are allowed per person/what constitutes as a carry-on. You decide to just wing it, and whatever happens happens, because at this point you’re just too tired to care.

Stage 10: You’ve finally packed everything, printed your tickets, and you’re ready to go! Thanksgiving break, here we come.
