College Football Preview: Week 14

By Andrew Musur on November 28, 2014

Another great week of college football is ahead of us! Let’s see how I did last week:

Week 13: 5-2

Overall: 15-7

By Conference:

ACC: 2-1 (Louisville pulled off a huge win in South Bend over the weekend.)

Big 10: 2-2 (Melvin Gordon ran for another 200 yards as the Badgers squeaked by Iowa. Heavily favored Nebraska lost 28-24 against Minnesota.)

Big 12: 4-0 (Kansas State’s win at West Virginia kept my Big 12 record perfect.)

Pac 12: 5-1 (UCLA and Arizona both had very impressive wins over the weekend. The Wildcats have officially entered playoff consideration with two of the biggest road wins out there against Oregon and Utah.)

SEC: 2-3 (Ole Miss played awful against Arkansas getting shut out 30-0.)

Independent: 2-0 (The Fighting Irish went down easily for the third week in a row.)

And here are my Week 14 picks:

#6 TCU @ Texas 6:30 PM CT (Thursday)

Line: TCU -6.5

The Horned Frogs are currently on the outside looking in for the final spot in this year’s playoffs. TCU will travel to Austin, Texas on Thanksgiving as they hope to improve to 10-1 on the year. TCU survived a scare from Kansas last weekend, but will need to step it up big time to hold off the upset driven Longhorns.

Defense was the biggest problem for TCU in the game against Kansas, so Texas’ sophomore quarterback, Tyrone Swoopes, will try to exploit that. This will be a fun one to watch after Thanksgiving dinner. I’m picking Trevone Boykin and the Horned Frogs.

Pick: TCU 35, Texas 27

#13 Arizona State @ #11 Arizona 2:30 PM CT (Friday)

Line: Arizona -1

The Wildcats have two of the most impressive road wins I have seen all season, at Oregon and at Utah. Arizona has won three straight behind the powerful arm of quarterback, Anu Solomon. Solomon was questionable coming into this game with an ankle injury, but ESPN reports that he will be the starter Friday afternoon. Arizona is too tough offensively for this Arizona State defense, and should be able to run away with this game late.

Pick: Arizona 32, Arizona State 28

Michigan @ #6 Ohio State 11:00 AM CT

Line: Ohio State -20.5

The Ohio State Buckeyes have an opportunity to impress the college football playoff committee with a win over Michigan. The Buckeyes currently sit at #6 in the latest CFP poll. Though the lowly Wolverines should not be much of a challenge for the Buckeyes, this is rivalry week, so anything can happen. Ohio State quarterback, J.T. Barrett, has played his way into the Heisman conversation and hopes to lead the Buckeyes to an 11-1 record with a Big Ten Championship on the line.

Pick: Ohio State 38, Michigan 21

#16 Georgia Tech @ #9 Georgia 11:00 AM CT

Line: Georgia -12

2 loss Georgia has quietly snuck its way back into the top 10. The Bulldogs will be without star running back, Todd Gurley, and will need freshman, Nick Chubb, to continue to run like he has all year. Chubb has been one of the brightest spots on this year’s Georgia team. Chubb isn’t the only factor in this game as the tenacious Georgia defense will need to contain the Georgia Tech running game. Georgia should be able to control the game and open it up late.

Pick: Georgia 32, Georgia Tech 21

#4 Mississippi State @ #19 Ole Miss 2:30 PM CT

Line: Mississippi State -2.5

Ole Miss has lost 3 of their last 4 games, and will need a huge game from quarterback, Bo Wallace, in order to win this game. The Rebels will also need that once #1 defense in the country to step up again. If this game was not in Oxford, I do not think the Rebels would be able to hang with Mississippi State.

However, Mississippi State quarterback, Dak Prescott, was not impressive in the Bulldogs loss at Alabama. He was only able to complete 56% of his passes and threw 3 interceptions. Prescott will need to keep his composure in order to give Mississippi State a chance.

Pick: Mississippi State 24, Ole Miss 20

Florida @ #3 Florida State 2:30 PM CT

Line: Florida State -7.5

Jameis Winston will have an opportunity to improve his overall record at Florida state to 26-0. Winston has not played great this year, but he has done just enough in every game to pull out the win. The Gators hope to chomp their rivals national title dreams. Florida DE, Dante Fowler, has been the leader of this Gator defense all year long. Fowler has racked up 4.5 sacks this year and could cause a lot of problems for Winston.

Pick: Florida State 28, Florida 27

#18 Minnesota @ #14 Wisconsin 2:30 PM CT

//d2h3bjlv56u1wn.uloop.com/kc07OsjDDftMKLWvBNSRyg%3D%3D/66d3c919/News-College-Football-Preview-Week-14-for-College-Students.png

Line: Wisconsin -14.5

Last week I counted out a tough Minnesota team as they traveled to Nebraska. The Gophers showed me they were for real as they upset Nebraska 28-24. This week, Minnesota has to travel to Madison, Wisconsin. The winner of this rivalry game will represent the West Division in the Big Ten Championship.

Wisconsin is led my Heisman hopeful, Melvin Gordon. Gordon has put up 200 yards or more in his last three games, and will have the opportunity to pass Barry Sander’s single season rushing record (2,628 yards). Gordon currently sits at 2,109 yards and will play at least one more game after this one, and possibly 2 more games if the Badgers can beat Minnesota.

Pick: Wisconsin 28, Minnesota 24

#15 Auburn @ #1 Alabama 6:45 PM CT

//d31gnh3j8cblbd.uloop.com/kc07OsjDDftMKLWvBNSRyg%3D%3D/b99dc74a/News-College-Football-Preview-Week-14-for-College-Students.jpg

Line: Alabama -8.5

The Crimson Tide lost a heartbreaker in the Iron Bowl last year, but has an opportunity to get a little revenge as they take on Auburn. Alabama has won 6 straight since their loss at Ole Miss. The Tigers lost their last two SEC games (@ Georgia, Vs. Texas A&M) and will need a lot to go right in order to pull off the upset.

Alabama has been very good offensively as of late. The Tide has one of the best connections in college football between Blake Sims and Amari Cooper. Cooper should get an invite to New York for the Heisman, and he should be able to hold off rival Auburn this weekend.

Pick: Alabama 34, Auburn 24
