How To Style Your Favorite Summer Hat

By Alexia Gonzalez on June 24, 2015

One of the most beloved summer accessories (along with a bikini) has to be a feminine hat. Not only does a stylish head topper shade you from the sun and conceal your sandy locks after a windy day at the beach, a great hat looks instantly cool and makes any summer outfit appear that much more chic.

Although some girls make rocking summer hats seem effortlessly cool, the idea of wearing a hat may not come as easily for some of us fashion mortals. Shopping for a great hat may seem overwhelming, especially when you’re set on a certain style that does not look the way that you would have imagined once trying it on.

Well I’ve got a secret for you ladies: the secret to picking out the perfect summer hat is to never assume what hat you will be walking out of the store with. Try them all on to find what works best for you and I promise that you will end up picking out a hat that you would have never expected to love.

Now that you’ve found the perfect hat for your own personal style, here comes the tricky part: styling it. Yes although you may literally be able to wear any hat with just about any summer outfit, there are certain looks that pair best with specific hats.

There are so many ways to make hat wearing simple and stylish, to the point that you will never want to go a sunny day without one. So whether you prefer fedoras or wide-brim floppy hats, here are a few tips and tricks on how to wear your favorite summer hats.

The Panama hat

This classic hat style is making a serious comeback during summer 2015. The masculine shape of the Panama hat pairs perfectly with loose fitting silhouettes and keeps them from seeming too bland, while adding the perfect dose of summer style.

A loose fitting navy blue and white t-shirt dress, or a striped top with white cut-offs topped off with a Panama hat provide the perfect nautical summertime look.

A light button-down shirt tucked into denim jeans with a Panama hat is really summery, chic, and so easy to put together.

Floppy Brim Hat

The advent of the floppy brim is that it literally looks good on just about every girl and can easily fit a variety of head shapes and sizes.

The easiest part of the brim hat is that you can comfortably wear your hair down without having to style your locks around the hat.

There is no doubt that a floppy hat works perfectly when paired with a bathing suit cover up or a bikini during a day filled with sun bathing.

To maintain the bohemian vibe of the floppy hat off of the beach, try wearing one with a colorful kimono layered over a long maxi dress or skirt.

For a more polished get-up, palazzo pants or trousers with a strappy crop top make for the perfect structured contrast to the wide shape of the floppy hat.

Fedora

The fedora is the quintessential “cool girl” hat. Channel your inner hipster this summer and try one with a narrow brim and a solid ribbon.

For a day at the beach, wear it with a simple monochrome bikini and a pair of classic Wayfarers.

For a real twist, try matching the ribbon on your fedora with your bathing suit, and wear glasses in a complementary shade.

If you’re looking to rock your fedora on land, throw it on with a printed romper and a low, messy bun. Perfect for running around or lying in the park!

Baseball Cap

The best summer accessory is the super cool baseball cap. Yes, I’m sure you haven’t worn a cap since sixth grade softball, but the casual cool-ness of a baseball cap can provide a sexy tomboy aesthetic that also doubles as a sure-fire puffy hair disguise.

A very cool summertime look is the classic-sports-team-cap over beach waves and a white string bikini. It’s sexy, sporty, and feminine, not to mention perfect for keeping the sun out of your eyes.

Also try rocking a low messy braid, side fishtail braid, or a ponytail with a baseball cap for an effortless “it girl” appearance. You can easily brighten up a pair of cutoff shorts and a white tank with a colorful baseball cap and throw on a pair of tinted aviators to complete the look.
